March 2008
Our
initial water testing has
been completed and we’ve
returned the Gweduck to the
shop for some minor changes
to airframe and systems
before the first full flight
is completed, most likely
later this spring. With the
testing to date we’ve found
the water handling is as
expected, with minimal spray
in the props, rapid
acceleration from idle to on
the step, and excellent low
speed control feel. We
loaded the aircraft to more
than 50% of useful load,
with water ballast in the
wing and sand ballast in the
fuselage. C.G. was changed
over a range from forward to
middle of the desired range,
and operations were
conducted with flaps ranging
from zero to full flaps. In
all conditions the handling
characteristics of the
amphibian were as expected,
and closely followed our
quarter scale model
testing. We’ve also dialed
in our flight test data
collection system, which
includes a variety of engine
parameters, airspeed, water
speed, and pitch angle. You
can also check out our
YouTube videos for these
initial tests on and off the
water.
